Real cybersecurity is all about human behaviour

With threat actors increasingly utilising AI powered Ransomeware as a Service (RaaS) we not only need to make use of AI to protect our businesses. We need to focus more on how to strengthen Human Intelligence (HI) in our cyber defence. Strengthening our human firewalls is absolute key – and it’s all about security behaviours.

There’s a wide misconception that the lack of cybersecurity awareness is something that can be fixed through increased knowledge. But using weak passwords or clicking insecure links is not related to the lack of knowledge – it’s a part of a default behaviour. That’s why all awareness training needs to focus on changing and supporting a shift from default behaviours to more reflective behaviours.

With AI creating tailored phishing emails on an unparallelled level, all end users need awareness training that will help them Stop, Think, Ask and React, when they see something phishy – instead of acting fast and on impulse. And it needs to be done as a process over time, not checked off as a one-time event.

A cybersecurity event in September won’t do much good if the phishing attack happens in February. But an all-year-round awareness training will.

Tear down the silos

But for an awareness training to really have an impact, organisations need to design support structures and reinforcement chains that allow learning to go from passive knowledge of the right behaviour – to new safe habits and routines.
