Global tensions create new cybersecurity challenges

In a world where digital threats are constantly evolving, it is essential for organizations to remain vigilant and continuously review their cybersecurity strategies. During Cybersec Netherlands, Bart Scholten, team lead for cybersecurity at Kiwa, shares his expertise on the most pressing threats and emerging trends in the sector.

What do you consider the most pressing cybersecurity threats?
‘The most concrete threats are botnets that exploit the limited cybersecurity of many devices and the vulnerability of critical infrastructures, such as utilities and payment systems. Especially in the current geopolitical climate, where cyber warfare is a major issue, this creates significant challenges. Securing vital infrastructures and preventing supply chain attacks are more important than ever. This becomes more complicated as Operational Technology (OT) from industrial control systems is increasingly integrated with IT solutions, creating new vulnerabilities. Moreover, cybercriminals are no longer always targeting their main goal directly but are also going after their suppliers. To defend against this, security must be strengthened throughout the entire value chain. Organizations need to think about the consequences of a supplier outage. Can they continue their production? What alternatives do they have?’

What trends in cybersecurity do you observe?
‘Particularly, the increasingly thin separation between IT and OT environments. In the past, these environments were strictly separated, but there is a growing demand for the digitalization and integration of OT systems. This can lead to more efficient processes, but it also brings new risks. It is crucial that organizations have sufficient control over their entire environment and implement appropriate security measures. Additionally, organizations are being confronted with new regulations, such as NIS2 and CRA, which significantly impact their governance and strategies.’

How does your organization address these cybersecurity challenges and/or opportunities?
‘Kiwa plays an active role in enhancing the digital resilience of organizations and products. At the core of this is compliance and on top of that organizations decide what additional measures they want to take. To provide insight into where an organization stands, Kiwa offers services such as testing, audits and certification according to standards like EN 18031, IEC 62443 and ISO 27001. These standards are essential in developing a robust cybersecurity policy. We also support our clients with security assessments, penetration tests and vulnerability analyses, enabling organizations to map out their vulnerabilities and improve their security.’

Why are events like Cybersec Netherlands important?
‘Knowledge sharing is very important in the fight against cyber threats and events like Cybersec Netherlands play a key role in that. The world is rapidly digitalizing and vulnerabilities are growing with it. That’s why it’s crucial for organizations to collaborate and proactively adjust their security strategies. By sharing these insights and best practices, we can collectively make the digital future safer.’
